Every Social Media Image Size That Actually Matters in 2026
Almost every "wrong size" problem comes from the same place: you design something beautiful, upload it, and the platform crops the part you cared about. It is not your design sense — it is that each platform crops differently, and most design tools hand you a canvas without telling you where the crop lands.
The sizes, at a glance
X / Twitter header
3:1 · PNG or JPG under 2 MB · no animated GIFs
Discord server banner
16:9 · PNG, JPG, or GIF under 10 MB
Discord sticker
1:1 · APNG under 512 KB · file must end in .png
The part nobody tells you: safe zones
A header is not a flat rectangle. On X, your profile picture sits over the bottom-left corner, and the platform crops the top and bottom differently on mobile versus desktop. So the usable area is smaller than the canvas you were given.
- ✦Keep important text in the middle vertical third — that band survives every crop.
- ✦Leave the bottom-left corner empty on X headers. Your avatar covers it.
- ✦Do not put your logo near any edge; assume 10% of each side can disappear.
- ✦Test in dark mode. Transparent PNGs that look great on white can vanish on a dark profile.
Where the popular tools land
Canva and Adobe Express are genuinely excellent — huge template libraries, collaboration, brand kits. If you are producing a full campaign, they earn their keep. The friction shows up on the small, repetitive jobs: sign in, find the right preset, dodge the Pro-only assets, export, then discover your text sits under your avatar anyway.
| What you need | Template libraries | Starlight Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Account required | Usually yes | No |
| Correct pixel size | Preset-dependent | Locked to the platform spec |
| Safe-zone guides | Rarely shown | Drawn on the live preview |
| Where your image goes | Uploaded to their servers | Stays in your browser |
| Big template library | Yes — a real advantage | No, by design |
The honest split: reach for a template library when you want inspiration and polish. Reach for a Discord banner maker or X header maker when you know what you want and you need it correct, now, without an account. Ours draw the avatar and mobile-crop guides directly on the preview, so you can see the danger zones while you design.
Stickers are their own beast
Discord stickers are the fiddliest format on this list, because three constraints fight each other: exactly 320×320, animated, and under 512 KB. Animated PNG is the format Discord wants, and naive APNG exports routinely land at 2–5 MB.
- 1Start from a short clip — under about three seconds. Length costs more than resolution here.
- 2Crop to a square before you do anything else, so you are not paying bytes for pixels you will discard.
- 3Cut the frame rate. Going from 30 fps to 15 fps roughly halves the file with little visible loss.
- 4Reduce the color palette. Flat, bold art survives quantization far better than gradients or film footage.
- 5Name the file with a .png extension — Discord rejects .apng even when the contents are valid.
Our Discord Sticker Maker automates that whole loop: it squares and resizes to 320×320, then steps frame rate and palette down until the file fits under 512 KB, and tells you the final size before you download.
If your source image is too small or too heavy
Two failure modes come up constantly. If your artwork is lower resolution than the target, upscaling it first beats letting the platform stretch it — try the AI Image Upscaler. If your export blows past a file-size cap, run it through the Image Compressor, which lets you target a specific size, or switch formats with the Image Converter. WebP and AVIF are dramatically smaller than PNG when the platform accepts them.
What size is a Discord server banner in 2026?
960×540 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio. You can upload a larger 1920×1080 image and Discord will resize it. The file must be under 10 MB as a PNG, JPG, or animated GIF, and your server needs Level 2 boost status to set one.
What size is an X (Twitter) header?
1500×500 pixels at a 3:1 aspect ratio, PNG or JPG under 2 MB. Animated GIFs are not supported for headers. Keep key content in the middle vertical third and clear of the bottom-left corner, where your profile picture sits.
Why does Discord reject my sticker?
Almost always one of three things: it is not exactly 320×320, it is over 512 KB, or the filename ends in .apng instead of .png. Discord also requires the server to be boosted to Level 1 before custom stickers unlock.
Do I need to pay for a tool to make these?
No. Every size in this guide can be produced free in a browser with no account. Paid design suites are worth it for template libraries and team features, not for hitting a pixel spec.
